Step-by-Step Guide for Educational Tours
1) Pick the right visa (most tours = Standard Visitor)
For short educational trips, students and accompanying staff normally apply for the Standard Visitor visa. Under this route, visitors may take part in educational activities and even do short study (up to 6 months) at an accredited institution—but not at a UK state-funded school. If the tour includes actual classes/workshops, get an acceptance/booking letter from the accredited UK provider.
Going for 6–11 months of English study? That’s a Short-term study visa instead. Longer study uses the Student or Child Student visas.
2) Know who needs a visa & when to apply
- Nigerian nationals need a visa before travel. Apply online and as early as 3 months (12 weeks) before your travel date.
- The visa fee for up to 6 months is £127 per person (students and staff).
3) Build your document pack
Prepare these for each traveler:
- Passport (valid for your trip) + completed online application + £127 fee receipt.
- Travel plan: intended dates, places you’ll visit, accommodation details, and a simple day-by-day itinerary (schools/universities/museums/industry visits). (Good practice aligned to application questions.)
- Proof of funds: show the trip can be paid for without working in the UK—bank statements and/or a school sponsorship letter naming who covers flights, accommodation, and daily costs.
- If your tour includes study sessions: acceptance/booking letter from the accredited UK institution (name, dates, contact).
Extra for under-18s:
- Parental/guardian consent (written), plus full contact details of the parent/guardian
- Proof of where the child will live in the UK and who will look after them. (If they’re travelling as part of a school group staying together or with a responsible adult, they may not need to give full care/accommodation details.
TB test note: TB screening is not required for visits under 6 months (it applies to visas over 6 months).
4) Apply online & book biometrics
- Start the application here: Apply for a Standard Visitor visa (GOV.UK). Pay the fee and submit your form.
- Book a biometrics appointment (fingerprints & photo) at a VFS Global UK Visa Application Centre in Nigeria—UKVI moved Nigeria to VFS Global in late 2024. You’ll be directed to VFS from GOV.UK after applying.
- Attend your appointment with your passport and documents; you’ll provide biometrics and submit/scan your evidence.
5) Processing times & priority options
- Most visitor visa decisions are made within 3 weeks after biometrics.
- Priority and Super Priority services may be available (for an extra fee) depending on the centre—use your VFS account to see current availability.
6) At the UK border (on arrival)
Carry your itinerary, school letter(s), accommodation proof, consent letters for minors, and proof of funds in your hand luggage. Border officers can ask about your trip and who is responsible for under-18s during the stay
7) Smart group-travel tips (schools & youth groups)
- Put everything on school letterhead: purpose of tour, dates, full group list (names, DoBs, passport numbers), staff-to-student ratio, funding, accommodation, and emergency contacts. (Aligns neatly with what the form asks.)
- For under-16s who would be placed with non-relatives for 28+ days, the school/parents must notify the relevant UK local authority—but this usually won’t apply to short tours.
- Keep original parental consents and copies ready for both the visa appointment and the border.
8) Quick Timeline
- T-12 weeks (3 months): online application opens—apply immediately and book VFS biometrics.
- T-10 to T-8 weeks: attend biometrics; finalise hotel/visit bookings and collect letters.
- By T-5 to T-3 weeks: decision due; collect passports/visas; reconfirm flights and insurance.
9) Costs to budget (per person)
- Visa fee: £127 (up to 6 months).
- VFS service & priority add-ons: optional/variable—check your chosen centre during booking.
